2025 Greek Pilgrimage - Day One

Walking in the Footsteps of Paul and Silas

Today, we retraced part of the missionary journey of Paul and Silas, beginning in Amphipolis. From there, we continued to Philippi, where we explored the ruins of several early Christian basilicas that testify to the deep roots of faith in the region. We also stepped back into the Roman era, visiting the crypt traditionally believed to have been Paul’s prison. Seeing the Agora, the Basilica of Paul, and the grand Theater brought history vividly to life.

After lunch, we visited a special baptismal site that commemorates the conversion of Lydia, a seller of purple from Thyatira. As Acts 16:13–15 records, God opened Lydia’s heart to Paul’s message, and she and her household became the first Christian converts baptized on European soil.

Our last stop of the day was Neapolis (modern-day Kavala), one of Greece’s most picturesque mainland ports. This was the very place where Paul, Silas, and Timothy first landed in Europe. Here, we admired the striking Roman aqueduct and the Acropolis before returning to Thessaloniki for dinner and a restful evening.

Beautiful day,

Donna Matthews

P.S. Luggage was located in Amsterdam and should have made its way to us today...BUT...as of this writing, just before dinner, it remains to be seen ☹️
