CHURCH OF THE HOLY APOSTLES
SABBATICAL GLIMPSES
A Season of Rest and Renewal
During this sabbatical season, Alex has stepped away from the daily responsibilities of congregational life for rest, renewal, and prayer.
Rather than regular updates, this page offers occasional glimpses—small moments that reflect where he is encountering God along the way. These are not travel highlights but quiet reminders of sabbath: space to listen, rest, and be renewed.
We invite you to receive these glimpses in the same spirit. Perhaps they might also be a gentle invitation for you to notice where God is meeting you in this season.
And so it begins...
My sabbatical officially began on May 12, and this first week has been focused on setting the tone for the next few months: creating intentional space for prayer, study, reflection, and rest close to home before traveling farther afield.
On Tuesday, I spent the day reading and studying at the Lanier Theological Library in northwest Houston. The campus is designed to resemble an Oxford street and includes a beautiful library and a stone chapel. It’s a wonderful place to study, pray, and simply step away from the pace of everyday life.
The library houses an incredible collection of books, along with C. S. Lewis’ letters, ancient biblical items, and replicas. There is also a partnership space with George W. Truett Theological Seminary, and scholars regularly visit throughout the year for lectures and talks. Reservations are required in advance, but there is no cost to visit. It might even make for a wonderful church outing someday.
On Wednesday, I spent time at Camp Allen reading, praying, and walking the outdoor prayer labyrinth. A quiet and restorative day — though apparently I only remembered to take one picture!
Today, I headed to the new Mockingbird Books in Cinco Ranch for another afternoon of reading and reflection.
Thank you for your continued prayers during this season of sabbath and renewal. Please know that you all continue to be held in prayer as well.
