Worship
Acolytes:
Acolyte means an attendant or follower. Your job as an acolyte is to assist the celebrant (the priest in charge of a worship service) and enhance the worship service to help glorify God. You are a minister of the church who is called to serve God. Therefore, every action you take should be done respectfully and in a dignified manner; the goal is for the attention of the congregation to be on the liturgy and not on the ministers. Serving as an acolyte is a commitment of your time and talent to the Lord’s service, which is greatly appreciated. Some of the duties of an acolyte is to carry the cross or banner in the procession and recession. You will also find yourself involved in setting the table for Eucharist as well as assisting in the distribution of the Eucharist. Another role of the acolytes at COTHA is bringing the children back into worship after Kids Worship is over.
Altar Guild:
The duty of the altar guild is to prepare all the things necessary for the celebration of the Eucharist or any of the other sacraments and offices of the church. These services are included in the Book of Common Prayer and the Book of Occasional Services. The altar guild is a ministry - a gift of time and talent to serve God in His house. It is a very great privilege to serve God in this way. The housekeeping and decoration of God’s house should be done with sincere devotion and dignity in good taste. The rector is the head of the guild, but he or she cannot do all that must be done in preparation for all of the services. The altar guild plays an important role and must be reliable and dependable. The rector sets the rules, the style, and the tone of the services by his or her preference for flowers, placement of the vessels used in the services. The rector appoints the head of the altar guild to organize and schedule work assignments.
Readers:
The Lay Readers of COTHA are a dedicated group of men and women who volunteer to assist in our worship service. They are lay persons licensed by the bishop to lead public worship under the direction of the member of the clergy in charge of the congregation. This ministry is licensed under the provisions of the canon for licensed lay persons. The lay reader must be a confirmed adult communicant in good standing and recommended by the member of the clergy in charge of the congregation. Guidelines for training and licensing of lay readers are established by the bishop. Licensed lay readers may be commissioned for this ministry with a form provided by the Book of Occasional Services. Lay readers have traditionally held an important place in the American church, dating from colonial times when clergy were scarce. Lay Readers also assist in the administration of the Eucharist so this position is very important to our worship life at COTHA.
Lay Eucharistic Ministers:
Lay person licensed by the bishop to administer the consecrated elements of the Eucharist. Lay Eucharistic Ministers may be licensed to administer the consecrated bread and wine at any celebration of the Eucharist in the absence of a sufficient number of priests and deacons to assist the celebrant. They may also be licensed to go from a Sunday Eucharist or other principal celebrations of the Eucharist to share the sacrament with members of the congregation who were unable to be present at the celebration because of illness or infirmity.
Prayer:
At COTHA we utilize prayer teams during communion. During this time our prayer teams pray for the requests of the individuals seeking prayer. We are also looking for people called to intercessory prayer. Intercession is the only thing that has no drawbacks, because it keeps our relationship completely open with God. What we must avoid in intercession is praying for someone to be simply “patched up.” We must pray that person completely through into contact with the very life of God. Think of the number of people God has brought across our path, only to see us drop them! When we pray on the basis of redemption, God creates something He can create in no other way than through intercessory prayer.
Ushers:
As an usher, you are often the first person to see guests and members as they arrive at the church and as such you serve as a representative of COTHA.
Direct traffic in the church
When guests arrive, ushers tell them when they can enter the sanctuary to avoiding interrupting a service. Their most important job may be to keep track of available seats and guide attendees to them. This is an essential function when the church is full.
Promoting Fellowship
Ushers encourage fellowship among churchgoers, providing information about the church to guests and extending an invitation to join. They may recommend ministries for members to join and introduce new members to established ones, promoting unity and fellowship within the congregation. Ushers also pass along prayer requests from congregation members to church leaders.
Collecting the Offering
During the service ushers collect the money offerings by passing the collection baskets. After the service, they count the money collected. As custodians of church money, honesty and integrity are important characteristics.
Maintaining Peace
Even churches need peacemakers sometimes. Ushers ensure that all guests have an opportunity to hear and enjoy the sermon without distractions. They may ask a disruptive guest to step outside of the sanctuary or direct a mother with a crying child to a special area for babies. Ushers observe the congregation for any potential problems. If the church is overheated, they turn on the air conditioner and pass out fans. They also stay alert for medical emergencies and act accordingly when they occur.
Preparing the Church
Ushers often prepare the church for services and special events, ensuring that ample Bibles are available for the congregation's use. For special events, ushers may rope off reserved seats or parking spaces. After services, ushers walk the pews to pick up trash.
Worship Team:
You could be called to the worship team if God has placed in you the ability to play or sing for His glory. As members of the worship team you will be a part of the ministry of ushering people into God’s presence. Worship is not a show it is an offering to God. The worship team will hold auditions as the need arises. If you feel you are being called ask yourself this question, do you worship God in private? When you worship in public do you feel others are closer to God because of your act of worship? If so we would like to talk with you further. If you are a part of the worship team here are some of the expectations. Be a tither, giving money is a biblical concept that can be an area of limitation if you are not participating as a giver. Don’t gossip. Talk to the worship leader first about any issues you might have… talking to someone else isn’t helpful. Pray regularly and study God’s Word as a way of life. The worship team meets regularly to do just this and you will be expected to participate.
Audio/Visual Team:
Creative and technical side to our weekly worship service. Includes running audio and managing various audio setups through out the church.
