Alright. I know you haven't finished shopping but let me suggest that you can still relax and get into the holiday spirit.
Many people complain that Christmas has become too secular, too commercial. While I agree with that on some level, if you pay attention you'll hear something unexpected. You'll hear things like:
"Joy to the World, the Lord has come, let earth receive her king!"
If not that, perhaps, if you're careful, you'll hear:
"What Child is this who laid to rest on Mary's lap is sleeping? ...
This this is Christ the king, whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste, to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary."
"Silent night! Holy night! Son of God love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at thy birth."
And yes, you might even hear these tunes at Academy, or at Wal Mart or at the Katy Mills Mall. You may disagree but I think it's great to hear these songs, even in the muzac form. If people shopping hear a little bit about Jesus, then I'm all for it.
Of course there are songs I'd rather not hear like White Christmas and Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire. These songs have nothing to do with the Incarnation. But even these songs are part of the cultural celebration of Christmas. And if, at the very least, people think about the One who came down from heaven (even for a moment), then I think it's great! God only needs a small opportunity, the heart that opens just a little bit, to shine His glory into a harden heart and replace it with a heart of gladness and joy!
