Back at the Casa-de-Hunt I cajoled my daughter to help me make the best burgers ever. She was reluctant and immediately offered to complete a litany of tasks that she had ignored over the past days - weeks and months. I almost gave in when she offered to wash my car….. But no really great father daughter quality time ever starts easy. I gave her the ground meaty goodness and
started gathering the spices and eggs for my burgers and she basically went - ewe ;(
3lb Ground beef
Bacon pieces (never enough)
Jalapenos (lots and lots - I used the No-Heat pickeled ones with kids)
All these items went in. She was with me until the eggs and then it was to the sink to wash her hands, and I made the patties. Then we grilled and grilled and made awesomeness. At the end of the process she said the moment that made my day and all the “ewe’s” worth it…..
“Now I have more respect for those that cook.”
My heart was overjoyed, my little girl was starting to understand the world that up until now I wasn’t sure she even understood how much went into preparing all the stuff around her.
What I learned from here was that respect is the first step to Independence. In order for you to be truly free and possibly independent you have to respect those in leadership above you, those that teach and pastor you and those you are doing life with on a daily basis.
This week we celebrate the birth of our nation as we gather and eat burgers and watermelon. What if we made a good mess and celebrated by real quality time with our immediate family and friends? I’m planning on a burger and watermelon rind battle and maybe even a good hose soaking from my wife before I am allowed back into the house…. But mostly I am looking forward to another moment of learning from those that love me :)
Have a great celebration!
