This past week we have been having some Valentine’s fun in the office. Each of us has been tasked to be someone’s Covert Cupid. The challenge has been to love on a fellow staff member in very tangible ways. Many oohs and ah’s have been heard over the last few days as different folks have discovered cute socks, hats, flowers, candy, beer, hedgehog mugs, and other various and sundry expressions of love.
I have discovered two things over the last few days. Love takes effort, and giving good gifts requires really knowing the other person. It has been said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. It is very easy to forget to show love to my secret office valentine with excuses like; they already know I love them, or I’m just too busy to go out and get them a gift everyday, but I was reminded last night at our family Bible study that scripture tells us, “Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. (1 John 3:18)” And yes, it has been tons of fun being a covert cupid and seeing the joy and laughter my gifts are bringing to my secret valentine.
My second epiphany, the more you know someone the better the gifts are going to be, has really encouraged me in my relationship with God. Matthew 7:11 says, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” In Luke’s version of this story the good gift God wants to give us is himself in the form of the Holy Spirit. God has given me some incredibly good gifts; sacrificing Jesus for my sins, Anna, Aléthea, Andrew, COTHA, good friends, a few cars over the years, stuff when we’ve needed stuff, and even great in-laws. In this transitional stage in my life being a covert cupid has really reminded me of how good God is, and I am looking forward to all the good things my heavenly Father is going to give me.
As Valentine’s day fast approaches, I hope you will give good gifts to those you love, and also receive good gifts, and may this gift giving fest bring you face to face with your Heavenly Father who absolutely loves and adores you.
