Helping parents do family better

On Aug 23, 2017, the public internet will celebrate 26 years
On Sept 27, 2017, Google will celebrate 19 years
On June 21, 2017, the iPhone celebrated ten years
Today - my firstborn, Trevor is 20 and my youngest, Evan is 18
During the years of raising my kids, the world's landscape changed dramatically.  When I was pregnant, the best selling book (which I had to buy at the bookstore) was "What To Expect When Expecting."

When my boys were small, I attended MOPS and eagerly awaited the monthly newsletter that the president handed out each month.  As they got a little older, we started attending Sunday School at COTHA and again, I eagerly awaited the MAILED newsletter.

Oh, how I wish I had the technology then that we have today.

Today we have instant access to tens of thousands of websites, apps, blogs, Instagram profiles, FaceBook pages, etc.  It's both a beautiful and vexing situation for parents looking for relevant information and guidance to raise their children.

Where to even begin?
HERE AT COTHA!
Picture
We have been an ORANGE church for several years now.  What is Orange?  The concept came from the idea that BOTH the FAMILY and the CHURCH loved children.  But the CHURCH only has access to children once a week, for an hour, while the FAMILY is with the child much more.

If you assign YELLOW (light of the world) to the CHURCH and RED (love) to the FAMILY, you get ORANGE!

It's the CHURCH and FAMILY working together to RAISE children in love with the Lord!

And let's face the harsh truth.  Raising children amidst the chaos of today's world is increasingly challenging, and yet we are commanded to raise our children knowing the Lord.
Let's Work Together!

The Crazy Cycle

“Why does she question everything I do?

He never shows any concern for what goes on around here!

I think it’s best for me to be single rather than to deal with a relationship.

I love where we are right now but I now a storm is around the corner.”
You may have uttered these words at some point in your life or you could be saying them right now. What if I told you there was a design for marital and dating relationships that allows them to flourish and bring joy rather than pain and discouragement? Well, there is! Dr. Emerson Eggerichs and his wife Sarah will help us understand what it’s like to be in “The Crazy Cycle” in our relationships and give us practical wisdom on how God designed a woman and a man. This wisdom, once applied, will spark new life into the life of the one who desires to grow.

Listen to the words of Chuck Kuznicki as he summarizes his experience with this study…

“I took the course with my small group a few years ago. We studied “Love & Respect” as a practical way to understand our relationships and marriages better. What I gained from the course was an ability to look at my relationship with my wife from another perspective. Still to this day, Stephanie and I laugh in the middle of an argument when we realize we are in “The Crazy Cycle". Since the course provides dialogue with other couples every course will be different. In regards to the spring class, I look forward to the course as we sometimes forget what was previously learned and I need a refresher."

Invest in your marriage or dating relationship today.  The course is $10/person which covers light refreshments and course materials and begins March 19th at 5p.

Let's Draw Near..

Let's Draw Near...

We have all heard the term Code Blue and most of us know that means someone has “flatlined” and their heart has stopped beating. Emergency personnel is called and equipment is used to “jump start” life back into a person in need. When a Christian “flatlines” in their faith it takes more than emergency equipment to give us life.

The first step in a Christian life is to visit churches and find one that you attend regularly and not just on Christmas and Easter. Once a home church has been dated for a while it is time to take the next step and become a member.

It is this stage where the code blue often occurs. It is easy to get into a routine of going to church on Sunday, cutting out coupons from the Sunday paper, grocery shopping and getting the kids ready for the next school week. Then comes Monday where we take the kids to school, go to work and begin our five days of count down to Saturday and before we know it we are hunting down our church purses and Bibles and begin all over again. We begin to notice little blessings but as time goes by we stop noticing them and call them “lucky breaks” instead.

A day comes when we are introduced to a thing called “ministry” and keep hearing people talk about serving others and how they love to be a blessing to others. This is when we get our jump start and blessings suddenly seem to appear and we learn that they have been there all along.

Now, I am not at a point where I feel comfortable laying my hands on someone, praying aloud or leading a Bible study group but I can make a mean pot of coffee and can cook spaghetti quicker than a pastor can give a sermon.

It isn’t what ministry one is involved in that matters but the heart that the serving comes from.

There is a point on the Christian Spectrum where one no longer awaits blessings to come to them and instead seeks those that they can be a blessing to. It is the point when we begin serving others and serving Him that we truly live in His presence. COTHA offers many ministry opportunities to “jump start” your walk with Christ.

This Sunday, we'll be hosting a Ministry Market.  It's an opportunity to visit with the leaders in each of our ministry areas and get to know what's involved in each of those ministries.  Your gifting may be in serving during the Sunday worship time.  But you also may have a passion for mission and outreach work.  Or your interests may lie with raising up the next generation.  Or finally, maybe God has been nudging you to take the plunge and lead a small group of other Christians.

This weekend will be a perfect opportunity for you to explore your options.

See you there!

2017 DIY

Devote • Invest • Yield
If you’re like me then you’ve once equated fitness with a gym membership and thought little about how much it is a lifestyle choice. I’ve also had the flawed understanding that purchasing a membership ensures desired results but we all know that’s not true. The gyms that cost a car payment to join should at least drop your body fat down by 5% but the reality is the cost to become a member only provides you with access. Access is great but it must be accompanied by devotion, investment, and discipline inside and outside of the gym.
Picture
There is a wonderful verse in the Bible that speaks to this phenomenon in Christianity. James 4:8a says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” God can tell us to draw near not because we paid an expensive price for membership but because Jesus gave His life as payment for our access to God. Not only has the payment been made by God but so has the motivation and inspiration to follow Christ been given through the Holy Spirit. You see, we have everything we need to grow in faith but, as James says, we have to draw near. But what does drawing near look like? Glad you asked. It’s quite simple, in fact you do it everyday. We all devote ourselves to something or someone. We all Invest our time and money into some purpose. We all yield or surrender to some entity greater than ourselves. You know what it looks like but is it in the right place? G. K. Chesterton said this, “The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.” Christianity is not easy but a divine joy awaits the one who tries it.
Picture
The vision for COTHA in 2017 is rooted in this truth - Christianity is difficult and impossible alone. So let’s do this together! “DIY Devote. Invest. Yield” is our mantra for the year and our goal is to read through the entire Bible In One Year and gain a clearer understanding of the Christian faith. I believe in this promise with all my heart that If we would Devote. Invest. Yield to God’s way then He will bring all of who He is into our lives and that’s a pretty big deal. This is such a beautiful promise made to us by the only true and living God!

Our goal is not to be the most informed Christians on the earth but it is to be transformed by the truth found in the word of God. Several pathways will help facilitate our desire to grow in faith. We understand that everyone’s experience is different so we designed this with you in mind…
  • Go through the Bible In One Year with an app - Download Here
  • Read the “One Year Bible” - See Mardel Selections
  • Take the Foundations course where questions and doubts are welcomed
  • Take “Bible Study Methods” class hosted by Grace Seminary to further your understanding of how to study the Bible.  Register Here
  • Join the Facebook group for discussion
I can’t sell you on what you will experience but I can tell you that committing to at least one of these pathways will undoubtedly bring you closer to God and His will in your life. The story of God is the story of us - know the story and make Him known in this generation.

In Him,

Christmas @ COTHA

We all have our special ____.  For some, it’s the mission trips, for some LOTS.  For me, it’s Christmas @ COTHA.  Our church family proves every year to be generous beyond measure.

This year I was excited about the new Christmas @ COTHA tree that we designed and built. It’s new; it’s cute.  It made me have a little skip in my step every time I looked at it in the foyer.  It’s the little things, right?

Next is the excitement I feel when making lists for the receiving families.  I get giddy at the thought of those kiddos opening gifts that so much love and joy went into putting the under the tree.

All of that is exciting…and thrilling…but nothing compared to the excitement and thrill I got on Monday morning.  Darrel texted the staff that we’d had a break in and the Christmas @ COTHA gifts were gone!!!  I’m in Boston, trying to navigate the streets to return a rental car (not easy) and my mind is going 90 to nothing trying to figure what to do next.  I let my human side squeak out and started crying thinking of all the kids that might get let down.  It hurt my heart.  I want so very badly for all the families to get all they ask for, and I was scared that wouldn’t happen.  FEAR.  It’ll get you every time.

Once at our gate, and we had taken a deep breath, all the steps started falling into place.

COTHA and the Katy Community would not be daunted by this little act of selfishness.
Facebook got wind of this.  The news got wind of this.  The community got wind of this.  Donations and calls started coming in post haste.

The flight from Boston to home is a long one.  However, on Monday it seemed to take forever.  Donna and I were in the air, didn’t know what was happening, didn’t know how to help.

Here we are.  A little more than 48 hours after the break in.  ALL the presents have been purchased.  ALL the presents have been wrapped.  90% of the presents have been delivered to the families.  I have been completely awestruck by the immediacy of the outpouring of love and generosity.

Here are a few statistics regarding CHRISTMAS @ COTHA for you:
•    6 families were on our list
•    27 people in those families
•    175 + gifts  for those families
•    Over 40 online donors SINCE MONDAY’S break-in
•    5 last minute super duper Elf Shoppers
•    8 last minute awesome Elf Present Wrappers
•    Over $7,000 raised in 2 days’ time

So…this is 100% NOT how I intended to spend this week and 100% NOT how I expected this year’s CHRISTMAS @ COTHA to go down, however…
Picture
There are not enough THANKS to go around to all the people who have helped, offered to help, donated, wrapped, shopped or just sent us words of encouragement.  We even had another local church bring us lunch today because they knew it had been a rough week.  I LOVE OUR COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE WHO LOVE JESUS.

An open letter to COTHA

12/18/2015

Christmas @ COTHAThis letter was sent to COTHA in response to Christmas @ COTHA...where we look inside our congregation for families that might need a little extra help this time of year. All donations and families are anonymous hence the "open letter".  We collected over 100 gifts for 7 families...a big thank you to all that helped make Christmas that much brighter for someone else!

To our sweet COTHA family,
We want to thank you so much for your generosity and thoughtfulness extended to our family. In the midst of your own busy holiday schedules and "to do" lists, it warms our hearts that you would take time to think of us in such a special way, as to come bearing gifts to place under our tree.
Each day our family enjoys your gifts of prayer, compassion, gentleness, joy, faith, and fellowship; however, it would seem that the saying is true..."the ornaments of our lives are the friends that bless it".
Thank you so much for blessing our lives daily and especially at the season of Christmas and sharing your love and kindness with us. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and most Blessed New Year.

Sharing a Christmas “World Vision” With Our COTHA Kids

12/8/2015

By Mark Tucker, Ministry Pastor of COTHA Kids Xperience
Christmas at COTHA is a special time of year for children of all ages, from 8 months to 88 years old and beyond. It is a season of joy, peace, love, and family togetherness. Christmas is also the most familiar of the church seasons for our COTHA Kids, who range in age from five to ten years old. Ask any of them, and they will know the true meaning of the season: it’s all about celebrating the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ.
Sure, for my kindergarten crew clear through to the fourth graders, and everywhere in between, Christmas is also about the magic of Santa Claus, stockings, holiday lights, hot chocolate, presents under the tree, and a very intimidating “naughty vs. nice” list. In the same breath, however, they will share the tale of Joseph and Mary, no room at the inn, a baby born in a manger, surrounded by animals, a bright star in the sky and, eventually, a couple of wise men bringing gifts to our newborn Prince of Peace.
They will also tell you something you might not expect from ones so young: It’s also about a season of compassion. “Compassion” is a big, important word and, thanks to our friends at Orange (the ministry curriculum/framework we use here at COTHA), we’re spending the entire month of December digging deep to learn the meaning. Yes, this month’s COTHA Kids Life App is Compassion, which is “caring enough to do something about someone else’s need.” And it’s not just about learning a definition, but it’s the way they apply it in real world form that is global and epic and will melt your heart.
For the past 15+ years, the COTHA Kids have partnered with World Vision to share gifts of compassion with other children around the world. Last year, through our church’s amazing gifts, led by our children’s energy and efforts, we collected enough donations to buy a goat, two pigs, some bibles, a few soccer balls, plus clean water, new clothing, medicine, school supplies, 10 trees, fishing supplies, and seeds.
This year, it’s all about a cow. Yes, I said it, they want to raise enough money to donate a cow! As their pastor, it puts a huge smile on my face and gives me a whole lot to “moo” about. In the past, I have witnessed children emptying their piggy banks into the collection basket, penny by penny. I have seen my student ministry crew members, inspired by the cause and the kids, answer the compassion challenge themselves and donate greatly from their own wallets and purses. My favorite moments are listening to stories of the COTHA Kids who worked odds jobs around the house or in their neighborhoods to earn the money themselves. You see, they are learning early in their lives that the true reward of the season is the joy of giving. That compassion then amplifies their gratitude when receiving gifts themselves. It’s an amazing cycle that continues on in their spiritual growth journey here at COTHA.

Would you please play a part?

Believe

10/2/2014

By Darrel Proffitt, Lead Pastor
One of the many things I like about having gone “Orange” this fall for our children and student’s ministries is the way they architects of the curriculum constantly remind teachers, small group leaders and facilitators what it is that we believe.  They place this in all their material, week after week:
ABOUT GOD
God is the one and only true God, yet He exists in three persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. God is the Creator, so everything belongs to Him and is under His control. God is holy, so He is righteous, majestic and loving. God is all knowing and purposeful, so He’s at work to bring about His will. No person, thing or idea compares to God.
ABOUT THE SCRIPTURES
God reveals Himself to us through the Bible, and it is 100% accurate, reliable and authoritative.
 ABOUT PEOPLE
People are made in God’s image and for His pleasure. But everybody falls short of God’s intention, or ideal, for people. In other words, everyone has sinned. As a result, we are all separated from Him, even though He wants an intimate relationship with each of us.
 ABOUT SALVATION
That’s why Jesus, God’s Son, came and lived on this earth, died and rose again. God offers His free gift of salvation to all who believe in Jesus and accept Him as Savior, the only way to be forgiven and reconciled to God. Anyone who accepts this gift is adopted as a son or daughter into God’s family and will live with Him forever in heaven.
We are using the same wording in the packet we are preparing for all of our Sermon-based Small groups that begin meeting during the week of October 5.  We are doing this to remind us who we are and what we believe.  To be reminded of the very foundation of our faith family is to be empowered to live more fully into who God has called us to be and what God has called us to do.
If you want more information about being in a sermon based small group, let us know at info@cotha.org.

Inside Out

10/2/2014

By Sean Nelson, Pastor of Discipleship

Martin Luther was born in 1483 in Germany. His family was classified as peasants but his father was determined to give his son a better life. His father wanted him to be a lawyer but a storm in 1505 altered the curse of Martin Luther. Believing that ST. Anne saved him from the storm he vowed to become a monk. He devoted his life to a Monastery despite the disappointment it would bring to his father. These decisions came from a fear of hell and God instilled by an early education in the church.
His Monastery life wasn’t what he thought. It was difficult and the spiritual enlightenment he sought never was found. Along came a mentor who challenged him to focus solely on Jesus and let that become his ambition. This proved to be the stimulation needed for holy discontentment in his life.  Later, Martin received the opportunity to serve the church, which led to more disillusionment. Frustrated and discouraged by the lack of leadership and integrity he witnessed, he enrolled in the University of Wittenberg to escape the madness.
This attempt was unsuccessful; he didn’t run away from the madness he was faced it head on.  Time spent reading the Bible helped him see the glaring disconnect between the papacy and the scriptures. Two Scriptures, in particular, changed his life – Psalm 22:1 and Romans 1:17.
If you are unfamiliar with how the story ends check it out - http://www.christianitytoday.com/ch/131christians/theologians/luther.html?start=1
God desires to impact the world around you but he always start from the inside out. All other mechanisms for change are fallible. Working from Salvation is the only spiritual, and logical, result of our life in Christ.  Let God start a spiritual revolt within by reading his word and praying for His will to be done in us.
O taste and see that the Lord is good. In His presence and with His people
