Caring for Ourselves Physically & Spiritually

By Paula Wilbrant, Ministry Pastor of Care

Twice a week I teach a stretching and strengthening class at a senior facility in Cinco, Katy.  In one of my classes I work with Alzheimer’s residents. It’s absolutely heartbreaking because several of them truly have lost their minds and can’t even communicate. It appears that they don’t even think but just sit in a vegetative state and exist.  Behind their blank stares there MUST be SOME thoughts! But are they able to think?
I’m trying to educate myself about this horrible and dreadful disease that robs us and our loved ones from life.  I’m learning that according to much recent research from the University of Cambridge, one in three cases of Alzheimer’s disease worldwide is preventable.
The main risk factors for the disease are a lack of exercise, smoking, depression and poor education in addition to the biggest factor which is age.  With that being said, there ARE things we can do; one of which is exercise!
It’s so easy to take our good health for granted. Those terrible diseases that others suffer from won’t ever affect us! We are immune!
The truth is, God created us to be healthy and to be complete in his image. It isn’t always easy… it takes a lot of self discipline. We may have to resist temptations to over eat, over drink and laziness! God knows our heart, and if we try to do what’s right, be conscious of being the best we can be, it just may pay off. If for no other reason, we need to be prayerful, honor God and give thanks that the Holy Spirit is within.
In 1 Corinthians 6:19 -20 it reads,
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
