If you’ve ever felt the tug to go on a mission trip, I want to tell you right now “DO IT!” Even if you haven’t, I encourage you to consider the possibilities…..my trips to Honduras in 2014 and Guatemala last week brought me closer to understanding what God wants me to do for his Kingdom than ever before and have been the most spiritually refreshing, rewarding experiences! You will “see” the world and its people in a changed way that you can’t do here in Katy, Texas but you CAN bring that insight home with you.
Here’s what happened in Guatemala:
We drilled two wells and we accomplished our mission to provide clean water. But the rewards didn’t start or stop with the drilling. They began with the people themselves – from the moment we stepped off the plane and met our in-country team we were shown the most loving hospitality. Then the people of the communities where we drilled welcomed us and did their best to make their home ours while we were there. They fed us and watched over us, they listened to our stories and they shared some of their own and I feel we built some very important, lasting relationships with these very special people. And I “saw” them - as God would have me see them. Different than me, yet the same in His eyes – each of us having something to offer the other. Each of us accepting these gifts of love. Each of us His children.
It is a wondrous thing to step outside one’s comfort zone and experience the love and community one feels on a mission trip. I came away with a full heart and a deepened sense of love for my fellow humans, however different they may be from me. I came away with JOY.
“Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them." – Psalm 126:2
Indeed He did.
(and it was a good time too!)
