Imitating Christ’s Humility

By Paula Wilbrant, Ministry Pastor of Care
2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
In church on Sunday, we wrapped up the sermon series on Mental Fitness. I have really enjoyed this series, which has reminded me that what we think about is so important.  I’ve heard over the years “you become what you think about." It’s TRUE!!!  I’ve experienced that very thing in my life many times.
When we focus on something it becomes bigger and greater. The thoughts consume our minds and we become them. If there are thoughts of fear or inadequacy, we then become frozen, unable to move, unable to grow, unable to serve.  If we are unable to serve, we cannot be “Christ like” which is what God has commanded us to do.
As the scripture above states in Philippians 2:2  “then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. It’s not rocket science, but it isn’t always easy. However, If we do take comfort from His love and share in His spirit who gave us life trying to be tender and compassionate, I feel we are at least putting forth a conscious effort to be “likeminded” and just as importantly accepting God’s sovereignty.
