Have you ever found yourself looking like this? Efforts to blow out or calm the engulfing flames of life seem to never work. You try and try to deflate the situation, but for some reason or another you are powerless against the natural process of the flames. It would be nice to have a fire extinguisher handy for every trial, but God finds pleasure in these circumstances, because he can use these trials to frustrate the plans of our adversary, grow our faith, and further his kingdom.
In the book of Daniel we find 3 Hebrew men under the heat of king Nebuchadnezzar and his false gods. The decree had been given out that all should bow down and worship the image of Nebuchadnezzar and those who didn’t would be thrown into a fiery pit. The 3 men refused to bow, which infuriated the king and caused them to be thrown into the pit.
Nebuchadnezzar grew an affinity for these 3 men and desired not for them to be thrown in, but they’re allegiance to God meant more than their allegiance to life itself. They stood before him and his counsel and said (paraphrased), “If you throw us in our God is able to deliver us from your furnace and from you, but even if he doesn’t, let it be known to you, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image you have made.”
Wow! What a statement! Not sure if I would’ve have said the same then, but having this story bookmarked in my spirit I can now stand in all trials and say, “my God is able to deliver me and if He chooses not to He is still my God.” When the flames of life taunt you, don’t rush to put them out, but rush to prayer and His word and He will see you through.
I encourage you to read this story in Daniel CH. 1-4 find encouragement and truth in God’s word. Also, check out this video of Shane and Shane song, “Burn us up.”
