From the Book of Common Prayer,
In Honor of those who have fought for our freedom and to God be the glory.
Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to the law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
The 4th of July always brings such fond memories to my mind, most of which include the fabulous fireworks, barbeques with family and friends and of course HOT….HOT….and more HOT weather! But, having said that, deep in my heart I remember the parades honoring the servicemen who over the years have fought for our freedom. I remember the flags flying in their honor. Those beautiful red, white and blue symbols of freedom flapping in the wind against blue skies. In the whole scope of things, it hasn’t been that many years ago that those battles were fought.
I can’t even imagine what it must have been like to experience those times for real! I pray that we will always remember and honor our forefathers who established this country and honored God in doing so. My prayer is that we are always grateful and always mindful, praising and thanking God for this wonderful country we live in and for our God given freedom.
